What does "foam density" mean & how is it measured?
Density in foam is a measurement of how much substance, or chemicals, are put into each cubit foot. So, the higher the density, the heavier the sample. For example, a cubic foot sample of 3 lb memory foam will weigh 3 lbs, and a cubic foot sample of 5 lb memory foam will weigh 5 lbs.
What is the density of your foam?
There are two types of foam used in our mattress, just like every other memory foam mattress out there. The visco-elastic memory foam on top, and the support foam on the bottom. Most companies selling memory foam mattresses push information about the memory foam, which is very important, but they lack information about the support foam, which is almost equally important.
Memory Foam
Our memory foam is a unique, advanced visco called TruCell. The TruCell visco elastic memory foam has a 4.0 lb density. In tests, it was determined that more people liked the 4.0 lb TruCell visco for two main reasons. The first was the issue of heat, or lack of heat. The memeory foam samples that were more dense proved to hold more heat than the 4.0 lb. Also, it didn't leave too much of the "crater" dip that many memory foams are known and disliked for. It has the perfect amount of support and contouring, but still allowing you to turn and adjust in bed comfortably.
Support Foam
The density of the base foam will determine how long the mattress will last, and the firmness will determine the amount of support it gives your body. The M-Grade base support foam has a density of 2.1 lb and an ILD of 41. Typically, average mattresses have support foams with densities ranging from 1.5 lb to 1.8 lb, 1.8 lb being for nicer mattresses. It's rare to find mattresses with base foams more dense (or better quality) than this. That's why we've decided to provide this quality. And for this reason, we can offer a 20 year warranty. The ILD (firmness or softness) of the 41 is considered firmer. This does not mean the mattress overall is more firm, but only the support foam. The purpose of a memory foam mattress is for the memory foam to cradle you, and the support foam to "support" your weight underneath.
Will your mattress make me hot?
Heat is the biggest complaint of other memory foam mattress. Because memory foam is a very dense foam, there are fewer air channels in the foam than traditional foams that are used in bedding where heat can escape. The more dense the foam, the hotter you will be. Our unique TruCell memory foam has an open-cell structure, allowing air to flow more easily through the cells and around them. This allows you to still have the quality of a more dense memory foam, but not have the heat built-up issues.
Does your memory foam have an odor?
Very little. Just like a new car has that "new car smell", all new mattresses have a new mattress smell. Because of the open-cell structure of our TruCell memory foam, the mattress can breathe easier, removing any unpleasant odors very quickly. In your search for a memory foam mattress, keep in mind that 5 lb memory foam has more substance and chemicals packed into every square inch, causing it to have a much stronger odor and keeping it from breathing as well.
Will higher density effect the life of the mattress?
Absolutely. A higher density foam will almost always last longer than lower density foam. But, keep in mind, the memory foam is not the only foam in your mattress. The support foam usually has a density of 1.5 lb to 2.1 lbs, which is what acutally holds your body weight. Because memory foam is much more dense than the support foam, it will outlast the support foam in any mattress you look at. This is why it is so important to consider the density of the support foam. Why is your "M-Grade" foam better than "HR" foam?
M-Grade support foam technology is only a few years old. It is much more advanced and created specifically for the bedding industry. HR foam (High Resilency) is used by almost every memory foam mattress manufacturer uses HR (High-Resiliency) for it's support, as well as in most other furniture, like sofas. Laboratory tests show that body impressions in a mattress are caused less by weight than what was always previously believed. Tests have shown that salts and moisure from the body actually break down HR foams, leaving body impressions. This is why many times a small older woman can have a deeper body impression than a 250 lb man. M-Grade foam does not react the same. M-Grade foam holds up remarkably better in these conditions than any other polyurethane foam currently on the market that has been tested. What does this mean for you? It means a much longer lasting mattress.
Can I use my boxspring with your mattress?
Memory foam mattresses work best with a solid foundation. If you use a boxspring (with springs), you will not get the correct support. However, if you have solid foundation in good condition, it will work just fine. Something to avoid, though, is to purchase a foundation from another retailer that was not specifically matched with these mattresses. Because of new Fire-Retardant laws (TB1633), making it required that a mattress and foundation set be burn tested together, it is illegal for a retailer to sell a mattress that has not been "burn tested" together.
What is your boxspring made of?
The Versiflex foundation is made of solid Canadian White Spruce. It has twice as thick and three times as many lateral slats as most other wood foundations.
Will I need to flip your mattress?
No, there is no flipping required. To help break the mattress in evenly it is recommended to rotate the mattress from head to foot every six months.
